Breaking News 3/4/2010: The Pentagon has been Locked down after Metro shooting. The news of the Pentagon Lockdown is very sketchy at this time, officials are not saying much. This is the way it usually goes with this type of thing and often reports are wrong. I will update the Pentagon Lockdown story soon as I find out more.
Pentagon lockdown, Metro shooting update: 3 reported injured and hospitalized at George Washington Hospital in the shooting. Buses have been ordered to the area for transportation.
Two of the Metro shooting injured are Pentagon police officers.
Metro shooting suspect is reported the be in custody but not confirmed.
Motive for the shooting in Washington, D.C., was sketchy, but the Associated Press, citing unnamed sources, that identified the suspect as 36-year-old John Patrick Bedell and reported authorities are investigating whether a second suspect was involved.
The man was calm as he approached the officers at the main entrance around 6:40 p.m., Pentagon Police Chief Richard Keevil said at a news conference. The officers asked to see his pass to enter the building; he started shooting without saying a word.
“He reached into his pocket and they assumed he was going to get out his pass and he just started shooting,” Keevil said. The officers were only “grazed” and immediately fired back.
Keevil declined to indentify the suspect or the officers, whose injuries aren’t life-threatening.
The gunman’s injuries are more serious, but Keevil wouldn’t elaborate. A Pentagon source told Fox News the gunman was shot in the head.
The three involved in the shooting were taken to George Washington University Hospital’s emergency room.
“Fortunately there were no other injuries,” said Keevil. “A lot of people are coming and going at that time of the night.”
The Pentagon was on lockdown for a short while, and the Blue-Yellow line stop at the Pentagon station is still closed.
